ABOUT US:
Starting out as a buying group in 1995, Brookings Natural Foods Co-op initially operated out of a storage unit. In October 2001, our Owner/ members voted to go retail, and we began occupying an 880 sq. ft. store on a side street about a half-block from the main highway 101, or Chetco Avenue. Our co-op had 16 members at the time of this venture. But after doubling our sales from $50K to $100K, the need for more space became evident in December 2002.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Luckily, a 2000-sq.ft space facing Chetco Avenue that we’d had our eye on for some time became available. Since our move, Brookings natural Foods Co-op has more than tripled our sales volume. We attribute this to our location, next to the City’s downtown parking lot on the main route through town.
Brookings, Oregon is a beautiful city, situated on the Pacific Northwest Wild River’s Coast, just 25 miles north of the California border. While somewhat remote (25 miles north and south of other communities), our co-op has nonetheless gained members from both the cities of Crescent City, CA, and Gold Beach, OR,
POTENTIAL GROWTH
Since Brookings is located in the “Banana Belt” of the Oregon coast, our temperatures rearely drop below 40 degrees with frequent highs of 80 to 100 degrees in summer months. In our building (which was originally built many years ago) with the traditional high ceilings and tall windows in front, the sunny days are a joy, and even offers us a peek at the ocean. Each day someone says, “What a lovely place you have” or “It smells good in here” or “I love the feel in here with the bright sunny windows.”
Curry County is predicted to be the fastest growing area in the State for the next few years. Already, new people have come in to join our co-op. They are glad that we are here to offer natural and organic foods, supplements, herbs (160 varieties), and fresh organic produce. We carry a number of products that are not available in neighboring cities. We make every effort to carry products that our consumers ask for, including wheat/gluten/corn free products, Celtic sea salt, Canine Caviar pet food, the best selection of tea in all of Curry County, dried fruits and nuts, organic beef, chicken, buffalo meat, and imported British items. Even more important for price-conscious consumers, some of our more than 150 members enjoy the dollar-saving benefits of ordering directly from our suppliers’ catalogs.
We buy locally grown organic and pesticide free produce as it is available, but carry organic produce at all times from United Natural Foods, Inc.
AND FENG SHUI ENERGY
Upon entering the store at ground level, customers need to step up to the produce, chill, and frozen sections. Then they move through another doorway to the non-perishable section of the store, and eventually down a ramp past the pasta, flours, rices, and the Personal Care areas; past our Lending Library into the supplement section in the front of the store. Naturally the ramp allows wheelchair access for disabled persons, so they can return as they came in. This circle routing creates good Feng Shui energy.
